A Virginia police officer suffered multiple injuries when an accused drunken driver crashed into his cruiser while he was conducting a traffic stop over the weekend.
The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a Chesapeake police officer had pulled over a vehicle near an intersection, WAVY-TV reports. While conducting the stop, a vehicle driven by Yacarely Diaz-Castro crashed into the officer's cruiser.
The impact from the crash sent the cruiser into the officer, who then was sent over a guardrail and onto the ground.
The officer was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He suffered fractures to his skull and his C6 vertebra.
At the crash scene, police found empty beer cans in Diaz-Castro's car, and she failed two field sobriety tests. Blood also was taken for analysis.
During the investigation, police found that Diaz-Castro did not have a valid driver's license and that she was originally from Nicaragua and had only been in this country for seven months. Possible charges she faces include driving while intoxicated and driving without a license.
